WE A L L WANT TO F E ED OUR K I DS HEA LTHY
food, but what can we do at home to provide the
best options?
With conflicting advice about what to feed kids,
along with the elevated costs of healthy foods, good
nutrition can be a challenge.
MODERN RESEARCH MEETS MOM’S ADVICE
According to Connie Basch, MD, it can be surprisingly simple to provide healthy
choices for your children when you begin to focus on what they need to grow
and learn.
“Feed your children food—not food-like products—including a variety of fruits
and vegetables, whole grains, and protein from plant as well as animal sources,”
Dr. Basch says. “Shop the edges of the supermarket, skipping the shelves in the
center. Make sure [your children] eat three meals a day.”
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Sometimes healthy eating is easier said than done, so Dr. Basch recommends that you
practice as a family. Try these steps to engage the whole family in good nutrition:
●●
Model healthy eating.
Kids do what we do, not what we say, so provide visual
reinforcement of healthy choices.
●●
Involve kids in making healthy meals.
Kids who grow vegetables and help in
meal preparation are more likely to eat healthy dishes at mealtime.
●●
Eat meals together.
Kids who eat regular family meals are influenced in a positive
way. They are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables; more likely to graduate from
high school; and less likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, or use marijuana.
●●
Sneak veggies in.
Add pureed vegetables to familiar recipes.

Labyrinth offers healing journey
A labyrinth, a path that spirals or winds inside a circular shape, is a
metaphor for our journey through life. It is not a maze. Walking the path
leads to the center, with the same path being followed back out.
Join us for a time of quiet meditation, thoughtful prayer, spiritual
pilgrimage, and reflection as PeaceHealth Southwest’s Spiritual Care
Department hosts an indoor labyrinth for walking and contemplation
for caregivers, patients, and the public.
